Building Trust at Scale: Cowrywise's Journey with Nomba

How payment reliability became the foundation for Nigeria's largest investment platform

In 2017, two founders had a simple question: why can't everyday Nigerians invest like wealthy people do?

The answer wasn't about intelligence, or financial literacy, or even desire. It was about access. Investment products in Nigeria had minimum thresholds so high that they might as well have had "high net worth individuals only" written on the door. Razaq Ahmed and Edward Popoola decided to change that. They called it Cowrywise.

Today, Cowrywise serves 2.4 million Nigerians. Students saving ₦500 a week. Professionals building retirement portfolios. It's the country's largest wealth management platform, and its growth has forced traditional players to lower their own barriers and copy the model. But here's what most people don't see: none of that growth would have been possible without systems that actually work.

From 0 to 1,000: The Beginning

"It was me with 0 users," Razaq recalls in our recent Against All Odds interview. "The first person that signed up was my co-founder Edward. Then I signed up as well."

With limited resources, they turned to friends and family to test the product and give feedback. The milestone that told them they were onto something? 1,000 users.

"The moment we crossed 1,000 users," Razaq says, "we felt probably there was something bigger happening here."

He was right. What started as two founders and a belief that access should be democratized has grown into a platform that processes millions of transactions monthly and manages billions in assets under management.

    The Challenge That Demands Reliability

As Cowrywise grew, so did the complexity of what needed to work behind the scenes. When you're managing other people's money (their savings, their investments, their future), reliability isn’t optional.

"When we're building a wealth management product in this part of the world, one key thing you need is payments. And I dare say that it's something that we cannot joke with for any reason."

The challenge became clear early on: if your payment processor goes down, your customers can't save. If deposits are delayed, trust erodes. If reconciliation is slow, operations grind to a halt.

For a product manager at a wealth management platform, every feature, every user journey, every experience comes back to one question: will the payment work? Can the system deliver without fail?

"If there is a partner downtime or a processor downtime," the team explains, "it means that my customers cannot make payments or they can't perform transactions on the Cowrywise app."

That's not a technical inconvenience. That's a broken promise to 2.4 million people who trust you with their money.

Enter Nomba: Where Reliability Becomes Real

When Cowrywise integrated Nomba's virtual account APIs, something fundamental shifted.

Not in a flashy, press-release kind of way. In a quieter, more important way: the product team stopped worrying about payments.

"With the introduction of Nomba, we've had a different level of reliability and belief in that rail. We're able to collect payments easily. We get virtual accounts we can display to customers in-app. It's one of those products that has given me peace of mind during the last few months. I don't have to worry about it, it just works."

    "It just works."

That's the kind of sentence that sounds simple until you've built at scale in Nigeria. When payments just work, product teams can focus on what actually matters: building features that serve users, not firefighting payment failures.

For Cowrywise, Nomba's virtual accounts solved multiple problems at once:

    • Instant deposits: Users can fund their accounts immediately via bank transfer to their unique virtual account number. No manual confirmations, no delays.
    • Clean reconciliation: Every transaction is traceable, which matters deeply when you're managing investments and need audit trails.
    • Reliability at scale: When you're processing millions of transactions monthly, uptime isn't aspirational. It's mandatory.
    • Operational peace of mind: The engineering and product teams can ship features knowing the payment layer won't break.

It's not the part that makes headlines. But it's the foundation that makes everything else possible.

What 2.4 Million Users Actually Means

Let's be clear about what Cowrywise has accomplished.

They didn't just build an app that lets people invest. They fought to lower minimum investment thresholds to near-zero. They made mutual funds, money market funds, equity funds, and stocks accessible to people who had been locked out of these products their entire lives.

They built a product so good that traditional financial institutions (the same ones that once required ₦100,000 minimums) started copying their model.

"We fought the battle so that the majority of Nigerians would have access to investment products and services," Razaq says. "Today we are so proud that some of those barriers that we broke, the traditional players are already copying the model."

That's not just business growth. That's systemic change.

And behind that systemic change? Payments that don't fail when a student tries to save ₦1,000. Payments that don't break when someone wants to withdraw their investment. Payments that scale as trust grows.

The Invisible Work That Matters Most

Most Cowrywise users will never know what a virtual account is. They'll never think about payment rails, or API uptime, or reconciliation pipelines.

They'll just know that when they transfer money, it shows up. When they want to invest, it works. When they need to withdraw, the money lands in their account.

That invisibility is the entire point.

Good payment systems don't announce themselves. They just work, quietly and reliably, so that the product built on top of them can shine.

For Nomba, that's the mission: to be the payment layer that fintechs, wealth managers, and digital businesses can build on without worrying whether the foundation will hold.

Cowrywise's story is proof that it works. From 0 users to 2.4 million. From friends and family to a platform that's changing how an entire generation of Nigerians thinks about money.

    What's Next

Cowrywise isn't done. Not even close.

"Access to investment products is one of the greatest wealth generating opportunities any country can afford its citizens," Razaq says, "and that vision is what drives us every single day."

The average age of a Cowrywise customer today is 28 or 29. Young Nigerians just starting to think about their financial futures. The team's vision is to serve them across their entire lifecycle: from their first savings goal to retirement planning.

"I want to build a life for them after retirement," Razaq says. "From birth to death."

That kind of ambition requires payment systems that can scale for decades, not just quarters. It requires partners who understand that reliability isn't a feature. It's the foundation.
