On our detection and reporting of the theft of company funds in our DRC network
Following the detection of suspicious activity within its DRC operations, Nomba terminated the involved agent, reported the matter to the appropriate authorities, and is cooperating fully with ongoing legal proceedings. The case demonstrates the company's commitment to strong compliance and accountability.
Gloria NnebedumIn early 2025, our compliance systems flagged unusual activity linked to one of our agents in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Uche Anderson Chieka, an Agent Network Manager in our DRC operations, allegedly diverted approximately $50,000 of Nomba's funds, working with an associate to move the stolen money between Nigeria and the DRC in violation of Nigeria's Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act. To be clear: this was not an abstract compliance breach. This was the theft of our company's money by someone entrusted with a position in our network. Upon confirming the activity, we terminated his access, documented the evidence, and reported the matter to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Alagbon-Ikoyi, Lagos. Chieka and his associate, Joy Oluchi Ani, were subsequently arraigned before the Federal High Court in Lagos on a six-count charge covering conspiracy, unlawful diversion of funds, unauthorised alteration of financial terms, and money laundering. The trial is ongoing. No customer funds were lost — the stolen funds were company funds, and our customers were never at risk. We are making this statement because our customers, partners, and the public deserve to know what happened and how we responded. When someone steals from us, we detect it, we act, and we hand them over to the authorities — no matter who they are or where in our network they operate. We will continue to cooperate fully with the prosecution and to uphold the compliance standards that responsible financial infrastructure requires. For questions, contact compliance@nomba.com
